Cavalier is often cited as a Playboy copy-cat publication, though it pre-dated Playboy by nearly a year. Published by Fawcett Publishing, a major book publisher, the original form of Cavalier was designed to publish novels and novellas by significant authors publishing with Fawcett, including legendary detective fiction Mickey Spillane, Cavalier would become much more Playboy-like as time went by. It was considered a very literary market, publishing significant works by P.D. Wodehouse, Isaac Beshevis Singer, Theodore Sturgeon, and many others. It was famed for its art by the likes of Gahan Wilson and Vaughn Bode, who illustrated some Saroyan works. The magazine would continue through the 1980s.

Cavalier was one of Saroyan's most consistent markets throughout the 1960s.
