Overland Monthly

Overland Magazine was founded in 1868 by Anton Roman, with Bret Harte as the initial Editor. A year later, Roman sold the magazine and Harte convinced the new buyer to give him a massive raise and complete editorial control. He brought many of the finest writers in the west to the page of the magazine, including Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, and Jack London. Overland acquired Outwest Magazine in 1923. 

Saroyan had published a few works in Boulevardier and The San Franciscan before he first published in Overland in December, 1928, but it was Overland that first brought him to significant literary attention. He appeared four times in the magazine, notably the stories Portrait of a Bum and Preface to a Book Not Yet Written.
